I know it’s late, but here’s a recap of the election result before I officially close this topic.
The chart shows the overall position of Barisan National (the ruling coalition in Malaysia) and the opposition parties. As you can see, this is by far the worst result the Barisan National (BN) has got since they started ruling this country. They got 140 parliamentary seats and 307 state assembly seats. In the process, they lose their 2/3 majority and 5 states, namely Perak, Selangor, Penang, Kedah and Kelantan.
Nobody expected such a scene in West Malaysia. Everybody was convinced BN will win big once again. The people had finally woke up and voiced up. Oil price rose, toll price rose, inflation, corruption, etc all led to the people ditching BN as their representative. All this while, people were scared of change, especially the older generations. As people getting more and more educated, they were not afraid to stand up and oppose the people whom they think did not really fight for them. In this case, the MCA and MIC were seen to be just lapdogs who never dared to voice up for their people. We had been Chinese and Indian temples got torn down and pigs got killed. But have we seen any mosques being relocated or destroyed? Never! In Sarawak, the SUPP who are the Chinese representatives had even much more of those stories! (But I leave that for you guys to find out). The thinking that “if I don’t support BN, I wouldn’t have any Chinese/Indian Ministers in the government” is slowly diminishing. Who cares about that anyway, as even if we had them, they’re doing nothing for us anyway. People realize that now. I put that to the excellent exposure to foreign communities where the people there are just far much superior. (They got free speech and people in Taiwan even scold their presidents openly. If you do that here, better be prepared to eat curry rice in jail
)
And it was unduly for our beloved PM to free Anwar Ibrahim, who still had such charm and support even after all these years. His party, the PKR won more seats than even the DAP. It’s no surprise, given how much the Malay community looks up to him.
BN was only fortunate Sabah and Sarawak people still voted for them. They won >95% of the seats here. Maybe perhaps the people here never knew this sudden change. If Sabah and Sarawak were to defect BN, we could see the opposition party forming the Malaysian government for the first time!
With the state election for Sarawak coming in 2011, perhaps we shall see another landslide for BN? It’s time to go down, Mr White Hair. I hope you know who you are. The people of the land of the hornbill are coming to get ya!
